McAfee SiteAdvisor recently published a study into malware production by tld. Its an interesting little artifact – it shows a pretty strong correlation between a tld that can be registered by anyone and the production of malware (for broad definitions of “malware”).
.info comes in at a staggering 73% of user registrations result in some form of spam email. I suppose this doesn’t surprise anyone, but it certainly reonfirces the common industry wisdom of ‘don’t use a .info domain, you will look spammy’
Australia is among the countries with a good rating (0.2%) and there is good data there to say that restrictions on domain registration (eg, the registering entity must be a registered company) result in less rubbish being published on that TLD.
Something to think about next time there is a call for open slather on domain registrations in your locale!
